Browsing through youtube, I was amazed by how many of the videos that claim to be proof that somebody’s house is haunted are of doors opening and closing, supposedly by themselves. Or, actually by themselves. While the internet has allowed us to have some fabulous and fun things, (like enormous and beautiful ranges of traditional door knobs to outfit our homes with ;-)), it can also seem to be filled with nothing but idiocy at times!
A search for ‘ghost door’ on youtube yields 1,190 results … there seems to be more of this sort of ghost video than any other. Probably because the phenomenon...

You may have heard your father repeating this mantra as he walked out the front door every morning (and then shuddered violently at the mental image it brought up, got up and put your cereal in the sink and tipped out your orange juice!). Well, now fathers have no reason to inflict the same pain on the next generation, as these door organisers help them remember everything they need to take with them, without the aid of disturbing mantras!
These door hangers are a lovely complement to our newly added Pass Design range, which builds on the fact that door handles are an innately useful place for...

Another edition in the story of your door in the future begins with these aromatherapy door handles from free:go design. They are very simply shaped, but include a revolutionary new idea … incorporating aromatherapy with your door handles!
There have been plenty of electronics-related innovations when it comes to doors and door handles, and all sorts of new ideas regarding automation and security. But until now, amazingly, nobody has thought to just make the thing smell a bit nicer! When you do some research (or if you have ever received one of those daily-germ emails), you will discover that...

Okay, while this technologically advanced door is within the technical realm of this category, it really isn’t within the spirit … it doesn’t have a handle and you can’t walk through it (yet), but it is a clever old door nevertheless. This is the Electrolux Screenfridge, a simple name for a very intricate piece of electronics.
It is a prototype refrigerator which has a digital camera inside. The digital camera takes a picture and uploads it to a server every time the door closes – another weapon in the crime fighting arsenal of the missing chocolate detectives! When you are...

Joining the extensive realms of useless inventions, and the equally extensive realms of useless inventions related to doors, are these bright doors from Alexander Lervik. Although, we must admit to being strangely attracted to them, in a visceral sort of way … not everything in life must be functional to be beautiful, as the Art Deco movement and supermodels the world over understand!
These bright doors build on the last post in our Beyond Door Thousand series, which looked at the Brighthandles door handles, which glowed green or red according to the position of the thumb latch – locked or...

These illuminated door handles are a technologically advanced take on the simple flip-lock with a little circle on the other side … they are from Brighthandle, and when you turn the privacy latch, the glowing part on the end of the handle turns green or red, depending on whether you have locked or unlocked the door.
Sure, we all love technology … but there are some things which are really, really unnecessary. We know that our grandparents were saying that about mobile phones 15 years ago, but of this we are actually pretty certain. It seems that the only person that would have the money and...

This is one of the cheapest and most fun technologically advanced pieces of door furniture we have come across! Sure, you shop at Architectural Classics … so you have excellent, refined taste, are more sophisticated than the Queen, and have a beautiful period style home which definitely does not scream ”Tacky! Tacky!” … which this door knocker does! But once you see it, and discover that it is only $18.99, you’ll be stocking up for Halloween, to give to your kids, and perhaps just to use once or twice, when your mother in law is supposed to be turning up…
Basically it...

These insanely confusing door bells are very simple, if you know what is happening – they sense the kinetic energy of a knock on the door, and use that to trip a circuit which rings a door bell. So basically, whenever somebody knocks on your door, they will hear a door bell sound. Argh!!
It is called the Knock Knock Door Chime - ”Who’s There? Orange. Orange Who? Orange you glad I didn’t say green!”, and it costs $49.95 (US, I assume). Personally I think it is really, really unnecessary … if you can be bothered going to the effort of installing a doorbell, and then...

These awesome automatic doors from Japan have a difference – which will be immediately apparent if you watch the video. They conform to the shape of your body, opening only as far as they need to for you to get through comfortably.
It sounds a bit faddish and useless at first hearing, but you soon realise that the implications on energy efficiency are actually quite great. Automatic doors have become something of a necessity in modern shops, as unfortunately people need to be able to get out with full hands, they often can’t use a door handle. A door handle would obviously be the most...

Okay, this is not particularly technologically advanced … in fact, when your husband sees this, he will probably mysteriously disappear into the garage, reappearing only with a tape measure in his hand and several ping pong balls in the other … but the concept is very next century. Isn’t it???
This is the ping-pong door, which flips from the normal vertical position to a horizontal position, so that you can play ping pong on it. It is actually an inner panel that flips up and down, so you don’t need to have extra clearance on the bottom and top of your door to allow flipping. Ah...
