About us

Leave the dry and serious traditionalists behind, and come into the realm of fun and imagination, with chandeliers made of bone, or weighing 8 tons … talking door knockers and cavemen’s lights. Ian Evans

Ian EvansIan Evans writes books to help people care for their old houses. By providing practical information on conservation techniques, he has made it possible for anyone to care for their old house and to restore it in an authentic manner.
A former journalist, Evans has been writing about buildings since 1979 and his many books on the subject have made him a well-known authority in this field throughout Australia.
His books are The Queensland House - History and Conservation, Restoring Old Houses, Furnishing Old Houses, The Australian Home, The Federation House - A Restoration Guide, The Australian Old House Catalogue, The Complete Australian Old House Catalogue, Colour Schemes for Old Australian Houses, More Colour Schemes for Old Australian Houses, Getting the Details Right - Restoring Australian Houses 1890s - 1920s, The Golden Decade of Australian Architecture - The Work of John Verge and The Lithgow Pottery.
A former Trustee of the Historic Houses Trust of NSW, Ian now lives near Byron Bay on the NSW north coast. Between 1998 and 2003 he was architectural historian for the Troodos Archaeological and Environmental Survey Project, studying ancient buildings in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus. The Project was jointly conducted by the Universities of Glasgow, Oregon State and Cyprus.
Ian Evans also advises the owners of old houses and buildings throughout Australia on conservation issues. He recently advised the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on conservation issues relating to the Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages at Cape Byron, mainland Australia’s most easterly point, and provided a colour scheme for heritage and new structures at the old Trial Bay Gaol on Australia’s east coast, also for the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
His internet site, The World of Old Houses, is a useful resource for homeowners and can be found at http://www.oldhouses.com.au

Ian Evans is currently researching concealed ritual objects found in nineteenth-century buildings throughout Australia. These, he says, indicate a continuing belief in folk magic as part of a tradition which originated in Britain many centuries ago.
