Ghost Doors Love to Swing

Browsing through youtube, I was amazed by how many of the videos that claim to be proof that somebody’s house is haunted are of doors opening and closing, supposedly by themselves. Or, actually by themselves. While the internet has allowed us to have some fabulous and fun things, (like enormous and beautiful ranges of traditional door knobs to outfit our homes with ;-)), it can also seem to be filled with nothing but idiocy at times! A search for ‘ghost door’ on youtube yields 1,190 results … there seems to be more of this sort of ghost video than any other. Probably because the phenomenon...

Art Deco Architecture on Flickr

A beautifully integaretd example of the Art Deco era is shown in this home in Sint-Katelijne-Waver, in Belgium. Colour is a great way to highlight features that would otherwise have gone unnoticed, like the mix of panelling and flat material on the top left window, which is echoed in the lower ones, but in a different expression, as well as the sunburst guard on the balcony, which would have faded into the background if it were left in its natural metal colour. Even the curtains are placed to accentuate the geometricity and style - much more dedication than I have!

A Little to the Left With That Helicopter!

At last, I have a new place to go to in my daydreams - when my fingers are tired of hitting keys, instead of retiring internally to a lush tropical island (there was sand getting in my bathers, anyway), I can now imagine myself at Charters in Berkshire, England, at one of the new Art Deco apartments that have come up for sale. Charters is known as the ‘last great country house in England’ (although I’m not quite sure why! It certainly looks more like a jetsetting city residence that has been picked up by Martians and dropped accidentally in the middle of a giant lawn). One journalist...

I Am Ironman…

Iron – it is far more than that thing in the back of the wardrobe that you occasionally use to straighten your clothes! (or that you never use to straighten your clothes, if you are like some that I know :-). You’ve probably also noticed that it is one of the more common metals for making awesome traditional door hardware, and has been for centuries. It is prized for its strength and variety of applications, and also because it is so plentiful. So, if you have had the good taste to choose a piece of iron door furniture from us, here’s a little about the namesake of the ironman… Iron is...

Where on Earth will Grandma live?

“Wallace, I love the house you’ve found, but where on Earth will Grandma live?” “Oh, bother! Well, I’ll just stick an extra room or two on the end, eh old girl?” “Yes, dear.” You can see that paying homage to the past is not a new phenomenon in this Victorian era photograph, where someone has built an extension onto the main, much older house, but tried to retain some of the original architectural elements, like the vertical brickwork above the windows and doors, as well as roughly the same tiles and bricks … yet the extension to the side is clearly...

Keeping Up With The Jones – First Impressions

The front door of your home is the first actual physical contact that people will have with it – touching the door to knock on its wood or glass, picking up the knocker or touching the doorbell. So it makes sense that your front door forms an enormous part of the first impression that people have of your home. Many of you are renovating to sell, not only to live in, and a well-presented front door is said by ’some’ agents to add ‘up to’ 10% to the value of a property! We aren’t sure if you’ll be able to charge an extra twenty thousand on top of the price of...

Very Old Wooden Door

It wasn’t too long ago that we added some beautiful wooden door handles and knobs to the site. Wouldn’t they look great on the building that this gorgeous thatched-effect wooden door protects?! We can only hope the effect is repeated inside – it doesn’t look as if you’d have the pleasure of opening and using this very old wooden door. (Probably the reason it doesn’t have much of a handle…!). It is bricked up, probably to prevent it falling to pieces with use

Spectacles, Testicles, Wallet and Watch

You may have heard your father repeating this mantra as he walked out the front door every morning (and then shuddered violently at the mental image it brought up, got up and put your cereal in the sink and tipped out your orange juice!). Well, now fathers have no reason to inflict the same pain on the next generation, as these door organisers help them remember everything they need to take with them, without the aid of disturbing mantras! These door hangers are a lovely complement to our newly added Pass Design range, which builds on the fact that door handles are an innately useful place for...

Beyond Door Thousand 9: Are You Wearing Air Freshener?

Another edition in the story of your door in the future begins with these aromatherapy door handles from free:go design. They are very simply shaped, but include a revolutionary new idea … incorporating aromatherapy with your door handles! There have been plenty of electronics-related innovations when it comes to doors and door handles, and all sorts of new ideas regarding automation and security. But until now, amazingly, nobody has thought to just make the thing smell a bit nicer! When you do some research (or if you have ever received one of those daily-germ emails), you will discover that...
